What You Need To Know: Is Matthew McConaughey Replacing Kevin Costner on ‘Yellowstone’?

After a 3 year hiatus, Matthew McConaughey is ready to take on a new role.

The first half of season 5 of ‘Yellowstone‘ wrapped up in January, and a lot of news has been targeted towards the hit series since. Rumors have been circulating that lead actor, Kevin Costner, will be making his departure from the show due to unconfirmed scheduling conflicts, making the shows fate uncertain to the audience.

So where does this fit Matthew McConaughey into the ‘Yellowstone’ World?

Chris McCarthy, who leads Paramount Media Networks, has confirmed that Matthew McConaughey has been cast in a Yellowstone spin-off, which is one of the ten projects being developed by Taylor Sheridan under McCarthy’s supervision. McCarthy clarified that McConaughey’s role is lined up, no matter what happens to Costner’s character. Although it’s unclear if Kevin Costner will be returning, Matthew McConaughey will be taking on his own role in the untitled spinoff, not replacing Costner in ‘YellowStone.’

The new adventure for McConaughey marks the actors first project since 2019, taking time to focus on his memoir, Greenlights.

During an appearance on the podcast “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard” on Monday, McConaughey said that being back on set “sounds like a vacation.”

“I am now becoming more interested in actually going to play another character in a movie or a TV show because all of the last four years of culminating and writing and getting these things together and getting more into some public service,” he explained.

“To go have some structure like, ‘I got a call time, I’ve got lines, I’ve got scenes, I’ve got a character.’ That sounds like a vacation right now to me.”

The second half of season 5 of Yellowstone has been said to air sometime this summer. Although there are no further details about the McConaughey-lead spinoff, we can anticipate that the project will be another Western hit.
