A recent recording, generated by artificial intelligence (AI), emerged on YouTube featuring Johnny Cash singing Aqua’s 1997 hit “Barbie Girl” in the iconic style of “Folsom Prison Blues.” Within just four days, the video has accumulated over 500,000 views.
The YouTube channel There I Ruined It, who created the AI Johnny Cash cover, has gained popularity by presenting pop songs with AI-generated voices imitating legendary singers.
During an interview with Business Insider, Dustin Ballard, the creator of There I Ruined It, provided insights into his process.
Ballard explained, “I first record the vocals myself so that I can do my best imitation of the cadence of the original singer.”
According to Ballard’s statement to Insider, he selects a song from the artist’s collection and subsequently utilizes a voice model trained on their recordings.
Following the widespread presence of The Barbie Movie on social media, AI-generated Johnny Cash quickly captured the internet’s fascination. The striking resemblance between the AI voice and Cash’s own voice also contributed to the attention it garnered. Previous AI recordings on There I Ruined It showcased similarities to the artist’s voice, but Cash’s rendition takes the series to a whole new level.
