After the debut of Barbie The Album, a deluxe edition of the soundtrack has been released today, July 21, showcasing an extraordinary rendition of Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine” by Brandi Carlile and her wife Catherine.
In their rendition of Indigo Girls’ iconic hit, the Carliles deliver a slower, acoustic interpretation of the folk song, which originally graced the duo’s self-titled 1989 album. This remarkable cover is also significant for Catherine, as it is the first time she is featured as a vocalist on one of Brandi’s songs, despite having lent her vocals as background support in her wife’s previous music ventures.
“I’ve been singing this song since long before I met The Indigo Girls – and when I grew up and we became friends I got to sing it WITH The Indigo Girls… but now Cath and I get to sing it FOR them,” Brandi said in an Instagram caption.
“I’m about as pleased as I can be that Amy and Emily’s wonderful and timeless anthem is being included is this brilliant film,” she added.
Along with Brandi and Catherine Carlile, he soundtrack features an array of original songs from a diverse lineup of artists, including Lizzo, Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Charli XCX, Haim, Dua Lipa, Billie Eilish, Sam Smith, Gayle, PinkPantheress, and many other talented musicians.
